This interesting house is a fascinating blend of eras. The oldest part of the building dates from the 16C, with a new brick fronted range added in the 18C. A mid 20C lean to extension was added to the north side of the original house, with unsympathetic impermeable materials and construction methods causing damp and damage to the original structure of the dwelling.

Our proposal involves the removal of this incongruous 20C lean-to, and the addition of a contemporary extension in its place. Designed as a ‘breathable’ construction, this extension utilises natural materials to help re-balance the moisture movement through the original parts of the house.

The extension forms a new kitchen, living and study space, opening up the back of the original house to provide flow from the old to the new. The shape of the extension has been designed governed by the desire to capture daylight over the top of the existing building through the high level rooflights, pulling it down into the new space, to counteract it’s North facing position.
